As athletes, it doesn't always have to be about racing and the competition. Sometimes, it's just as important to slow down, take a deep breath and immerse yourself in a life-changing experience.
"I've never felt so content bringing this incredible group of people together, it was an honour and something I'll never forget. The bonds that are created on the road are strengthened off it, through the sharing of meals, great wine and even better conversation. My goal of making a positive impact on the world through endurance sports is happening, in everything we do." - Travis McKenzie, Founder NTSQ Velo Premium Cycling Retreats

When you arrive at L’Auberge Carmel, the exterior of the building is right on the street so it’s hard to appreciate the beauty of the property as you are standing literally feet away from the front door. It’s not until you walk through the enormous wood framed glass door and up the stairs into the courtyard do you appreciate the subtle yet magnificent ambience of this hotel. You are still only steps from the street out front, but you immediately feel the relaxed atmosphere of this paradise. I wanted to capture this feeling here….
I like this shot, not because of it’s composition nor a technical aspect, but as it does a good job of showing how far this team goes to take care of the little things. Sharon, is one of the most accomplished cyclists you'll meet, although Nic was still able to give some guidance on the fitting of the Cervelo C5 that NTSQ Velo equips all the guests with, on each retreat.
I had been trying to get that cloud sitting on the hilltop for ages (ok, it was actually about 20 minutes) but the crew was rolling fast and we weren’t able to stay ahead to set up a shot. I was hanging out the side of the lead vehicle and managed to get this one. I love that everyone is working together and yes, the cloud looks pretty good too!
The quintessential Big Sur bridge shot. Even though I've seen many strong images of this location, there’s something always so special about seeing it in person and especially with new friends enjoying it in their element. Plus I got on the first take so, there’s that.
I think that one of the hidden gems of these adventures is the service, not only from the NTSQ Velo staff but also from the teams at the Relais & Chateaux properties that are selected. Even as a "satellite" member of the NTSQ Velo team, I was treated to the best service I’ve ever experienced in my life. I found myself remarking at every meal, that "this is the best version of 'x' that I’d ever eaten."!
I don't think there is a better example of someone completed immersed in their experience than this one of Sharon. This was at the top of some pretty steep climbs, and as an athlete, I can recognise the wave of accomplishment and child-like freedom that comes over you in these moments. It really helped me get the right shot here.
Maybe my favourite shot of the whole trip. The bond that all the guests made out on the road, the incredible meals, drinks and discussions at night, made some strong connections and kept everyone's spirits high. Everyone supporting and cheering each other on, on daily basis was a joy to be a part of. Jamie’s exuberance in this shot is a snapshot of how much fun they were all having, even at the top of a big climb!
